Meet Coach Hui Lam (HL) Teh – Founder of Teh Chess Academy
Hello everyone! I’m Teh, Hui Lam, a passionate chess coach, tournament arbiter, and lifelong enthusiast of the game. With over a decade of experience in coaching and competitive play, I am dedicated to helping students unlock their potential, one move at a time.
I hold the prestigious titles of FIDE Arbiter and FIDE School Instructor, with active ratings in Classical, Rapid, and Blitz formats (FIDE 1864, 1803, and 1851, respectively). I currently serve as a Council Member of the Chess Association of Western Australia (CAWA), actively contributing to the growth of chess in our community.
At Teh Chess Academy, my mission is to develop critical thinking, confidence, and sportsmanship in students of all ages. My coaching journey includes leading teams at Subiaco Primary School to notable successes, such as 3rd place in the SCL2 Tournament and 2nd place in the SCL Girls competition. I’ve also served as Chief Arbiter for major events, including the Perth School Chess Leagues and WA Spring Blitz Junior Chess Tournament.
In addition to coaching, I’ve competed in national and international tournaments, securing achievements like:
🏆 Champion at the National Team Championship (Malaysia, 2019)
🥈 Runner-Up at the Thailand Pattaya Open Amateur (2018)
🎖️ Top 30 Finish at the Australian Open (2023)
Beyond chess, I hold an MBA from the University of Illinois and a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malaya. I’m also fluent in English, Mandarin, and Malay, and enjoy playing the piano and violin when I’m not analyzing chess strategies.
I’m excited to share my love for chess with students, parents, and the broader community. Whether you’re a beginner taking your first steps or an intermediate player aiming to sharpen your skills, Teh Chess Academy is here to guide you.
Let’s make the next move together!
